‘Mission Oflameron’ Synopsis. Jett: “It’s not even clear which frequencies were or are being used. I suspect it’s not just one or two frequencies, but an entire spectrum. The physical principles behind wave encoding in programmable metasurfaces rely on manipulating three key parameters of an electromagnetic field: phase, amplitude, and polarization. In the classic, textbook model, a metasurface consists of an array of unit cells – or ‘meta-atoms’ – each of which independently alters the properties of an incident wave. But here, the computational process could be distributed across both electromagnetic field parameters and frequencies. Any ideas?” Steeve: “A planet’s surface could function as a kind of metasurface. On the Moon, for instance, you could arrange craters into specific, deliberate shapes. With no atmosphere, those shapes would remain stable.” Jett: “Wrong level, wrong scale. That’s far too small for a universal, global context.” Steeve: “Then perhaps we should consider streams of charged cosmic particles – a sort of reflective, albeit dynamic, metasurface. Any given configuration would only exist for a fleeting moment.” Jett: “We’re inching ever closer to the question of a colossal error-correction algorithm.” Steeve: “In programmable metasurfaces based on digital encoding, a single surface configuration can perform different tasks depending on the input signals. An array – even one not limited to binary or quaternary elements – can function like an optical hologram or a diffraction grating. These arrays could be sedecimal (hexadecimal), duotrigesimal (base-32), or even N-dimensional with a fluid, floating dimensionality.” Jett: “Space-Time Coding (STC). In conventional digital coding, a metasurface distributes phases across an array of elements to create a specific wavefront. In simple terms, it’s like a static mirror with a complex shape. In space-time coding, each element of the metasurface doesn’t just shift the phase; it does so according to a specific temporal algorithm – a periodic function. This gives rise to complex quantum-physical and radio-engineering effects. For instance, ultra-fast phase modulation over time creates an effect similar to the Doppler effect, even though the surface itself remains stationary. The reflected wave changes its frequency. This makes it possible to shift a signal from one frequency to another without using standard semiconductor mixers or local oscillators.” Steeve: “If I understand correctly…” Jett: “…we need to find a computing platform of the appropriate caliber.”
